Romanian princess held over cockfights

Romania’s Princess Irina Walker has been arrested in the U.S. amid allegations she is a member of an illegal cockfighting ring. The princess, who is the third daughter of King Michael I, was held by police in Oregon on Thursday (15Aug13), along with her husband.
They are accused of staging at least 10 illegal animal bouts since April last year (12).
Amanda Marshall, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, says, “Cockfighting is illegal under federal law and under the laws of all 50 states… Besides being a barbaric practice, cockfighting jeopardises public health and safety and facilitates the commission of other criminal acts.”
Princess Irina moved to Oregon in 1983 in a bid to remain out of the public eye. Her father was forced to abdicate in 1947 as the country’s monarchy was disestablished.
