Ryan Reynolds has kept his role in Pokemon Detective Pikachu a secret from his children as he wants them to be surprised when they see the movie.
The Deadpool star told Extra TV that his daughter James, four, has already pointed out that the movie’s lead animated character sounds like him, but he brushed the comment off so she could be surprised when she watches it.
“My daughter James said I sound like him. She said, ‘You sound like Detective Pikachu!’ and I didn’t really acknowledge it,” the star laughed. “(I) was just like, ‘Really? Tell me more about that.’ I want to leave it as a surprise to them. We will all go see it opening day and then I will let them know it’s me.” Pikachu also has the same facial expressions as Ryan as he portrays the character via motion capture technology.
The Green Lantern actor, who shares James and Inez, two, with 31-year-old actress Blake Lively, also reflected that this is the first time that his children have shown an interest in his work, despite the fact that they don’t actually know that it’s him.
“They know Deadpool is their dad, they haven’t seen it so they’re not fully invested in it, for some reason Pokemon is like catnip to children…” Ryan, 42, considered. “This is the first movie I have had that they are 100 percent invested in and psyched to see.”
The star couldn’t help but gush over his children and joked that his kids are more bothered by his “needy” ways than his movie roles.
“I just think they are going to literally separate their own eyeballs rolling them around me,” he laughed.
