Salt-N-Pepa DJ suing bandmates for royalties

Salt-N-Pepa’s former sidekick DJ Spinderella is suing the rap duo over alleged unpaid royalties.
Deidra Roper has accused the pair of short-changing her for years and then firing her, according to court documents obtained by The Blast.
Roper claims she was an integral part of the group when it formed in the mid-1980s, and she continued promoting the band when she and her former pals went on hiatus in the late 1990s.
But the trio’s friendship became strained at the start of the new century when an alleged cash handout for a compilation album never came.
“By the early 2000s, the Defendants discussed with Roper an SNP reunion which would have possibly involved, among other things, a television show based on the legendary female group’s rise to stardom,” the complaint reads.
But Salt-N-Pepa signed a deal for a VH1 show that didn’t include Roper, who was “invited to appear – only as a guest – on several episodes of the Salt N Pepa television show for minimal compensation”.
Another slight came when the DJ agreed to take part in a Las Vegas residency with her former bandmates, which began last year (18). She claims her per-show payments did not arrive on time or regularly, and when she complained about her low salary, she received notice of termination from the band’s lawyers.
Spinderella is demanding unspecified damages, accounting for all their royalties and work, and for an injunction prohibiting Salt-N-Pepa from using her name or likeness.
