Sam Claflin overhauled diet and fitness regime for Adrift role

Sam Claflin had to train twice a day when he landed in Fiji to prepare for sea drama Adrift.

Sam stars opposite Shailene Woodley in Baltasar Kormakur’s new feature, based on the true story of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, who, in 1983, sailed into the eye of one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.

The slim actor was required to look increasingly gaunt for his Adrift scenes, and accordingly, had to quickly shed the pounds he’d recently put on while shooting period thriller The Nightingale.

Baltasar basically told me I was fat,” Sam smiled to British newspaper Metro. “And I was fat – for me. I was not ready for the world to see me like that so I knew the minute I got to Fiji I was going on a diet and training twice a day. I have done it before so I knew I could do it. I am very disciplined and determined but I don’t enjoy the gym.”

Sam, who has showed off a buff physique in films such as Love, Rosie and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, admitted in a Q&A following a screening of Adrift in London earlier this week (beg25Jun18), that he went on a crash diet as soon as he arrived in Fiji, where the majority of the film was shot.

However, his restricted eating plan led to trouble as cameras began rolling.
“I was on a crash diet from the second I got to Fiji… I arrived in Fiji fat, out of shape, knowing where I needed to get to at the end of this movie,” he said. “So, I wasn’t eating very much and I’d set out and had about three or four coffees first thing in the morning with no food and apparently that’s a recipe for disaster on a boat. Shailene was literally rubbing my back as I was puking over the back.”
