Sarah Jessica Parker campaigns to save New York’s libraries

Sarah Jessica Parker has urged New Yorkers to protest against cuts to the city’s public library services.
The former Sex and the City star, 54, has written a blog for the New York Public Library’s website, calling on local residents to lend their support to an online petition launched by the star, and share the reasons they love their local book lender.
Institutions across the system will face an $11 million (£8.6 million) cut in funding under proposals from New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, which would force them to dramatically scale back their opening hours.
Parker wrote that she, her husband Matthew Broderick and their three children are regular users of their local library in Greenwich Village, and claimed that it is “not only a regular neighborhood stop for books, programs, and more, it is a cornerstone, a beacon, and one of the most beloved buildings in our community.
“I don’t know what we’d do without it,” she admitted.
Channelling her Sex and the City character, lifestyle writer Carrie Bradshaw, Parker added: “As Carrie Bradshaw might, I couldn’t help but wonder: Can New York City survive without strong public libraries? Could, I as a New Yorker accept cuts to our wonderful, important, necessary, and beloved libraries? I’m sorry. I can’t.”
The Libraries Make NYC Stronger campaign website has already gained hundreds of notes of support, with residents detailing why they can’t get by without their local branch.
