Sarah Michelle Gellar apologizes for divisive pre-Thanksgiving lingerie post

Sarah Michelle Gellar has apologized for sharing a social media post in which she encouraged herself “not to overeat” on Thanksgiving (22Nov18).

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress took to Instagram on Monday (19Nov18) to upload several throwback photos of her posing in lingerie for a 2007 Maxim photoshoot, and she captioned the slideshow: “I’m just going to pin these up all over my house as a reminder not to overeat on Thursday #thanksgivingprep.”

However, the post quickly stirred up a controversy among her followers, with some claiming that she was “fat shaming” others or potentially triggering people with eating disorders, and accordingly, she has now updated the post with an apology.

“It’s come to my attention that some people think I was ‘fat shaming’ with this post. That could not be further from my intentions,” the 41-year-old commented. “I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to myself not to do that. I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humour. Any one that knows me, knows I would never intentionally ‘shame’ any one on any basis (sic). I am a champion of all people.”

Prior to posting her statement, Sarah received a mixed range of comments on the post, with one Instagram user stating, “Please don’t promote diet culture. Not the kind of message we should be sending,” and another writing, “Disappointing to use your platform to promote thinspiration on a once a year holiday that should be about togetherness and gratitude.”

Yet, others supported the star, who shares two children with her husband Freddie Prinze Jr., and praised her for standing up for herself.

“You can enjoy Thanksgiving without going crazy!!” one noted, while another added: “You are gorgeous and you have the right to post whatever you want. I applaud your hard work to look like you do and should be able to joke around.”
