Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs considered reality TV dance stint

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs considered signing up for a stint on reality TV show Dancing With The Stars when MTV stopped playing music videos as he was convinced his rap career would go into free fall. The hip-hop mogul feared the music business would be irreparably damaged when bosses at the TV channel decided to move away from their rolling music video content in the mid-2000s, as artists wouldn’t have anywhere to show their promos.
Combs admits he was so fearful for his own career, he even considered turning to the ballroom dance contest to connect with fans.
In an interview with business mogul Steve Stoute at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France, Combs says, “For music, you just had to go into the abyss or the stratosphere with no plan, no destination. I was trying to get myself booked on Dancing with the Stars because there was no place for me to go to tell my story.”
Combs is convinced the rise of social media has given artists a new way of promoting their music, but he is hoping to turn back the clock and give stars a new outlet for their music videos with his upcoming Revolt cable channel.
He adds, “All I can do is get up in the morning and try to make it possible. So, I wish myself luck.”
Combs’ Revolt network launches in the U.S. this autumn (13).
