Sean Penn raises millions for charity

Actor Sean Penn helped to raise $6 million (GBP3.75 million) for charity at a star-studded event in California on Saturday (11Jan14). The Milk star hosted the Help Haiti Home Gala, which was attended by rumoured girlfriend Charlize Theron, Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Hemsworth, and Julia Roberts, to benefit his charity J/P Haitian Relief Organization.
U2 also surprised attendees with a performance – their first in four years.
Penn tells People.com, “This town has been very supportive of me and, more importantly, what our organization is doing in Haiti. I got a lot of gratitude and no complaints.”
During the gala several celebrity attendees bid on various items – U.S. news anchor Anderson Cooper made the biggest purchase of the night, paying $1.4 million (GBP875,000) for a sculpture to be made from discarded firearms owned by Penn.
Meanwhile, Paltrow and Martin paid $650,000 (GBP406,250) for a Banksy art piece.
