Serena Williams has shot down reports she’s having a girl after her sister Venus Williams appeared to let slip the baby’s gender.
The American tennis star and her Reddit co-founder fiance Alexis Ohanian announced in April (17), that they were expecting their first child.
While Serena has kept the baby’s gender under wraps, it was speculated on Wednesday (31May17) that she is having a girl after her older sister Venus Williams was asked at the French Open what she would like the baby to call her, quipping, “She’s going to call me ‘favourite aunt.'”
However, on Thursday, Serena clarified Venus’ comment, sharing a post on Instagram stating that she has no plans to reveal the baby’s gender before giving birth.
“I think the surprise of knowing what you are going to have on that very special day is prob (probably) the best surprise you can ever have,” she wrote.
The 35-year-old added that she and Venus, as well as their half-sisters Yetunde, Lyndrea and Isha Price, have a tendency to use female pronouns in conversation.
“So to clarify what Venus said, I am always joking with my sisters to see what favours I can get them to do for me next. If I want something from my sisters, I say baby Venus, baby Lyn or baby Isha needs it. I did not grow up with any brothers, only sisters, and we all say ‘she’ more than ‘he,'” added Serena.
“Unless I am joking with my Dad or Alexis, and I’m trying to get something out of them too.”
Serena, who was roughly eight weeks pregnant when she won the Australian Open in January (17), is due to give birth in the autumn.
