Shakira and Ava DuVernay among World’s Greatest Leaders

Shakira, Chance The Rapper, and filmmaker Ava Duvernay have been named among the 50 greatest leaders in the world in a new poll.
Fortune Magazine editors ranked people from all walks of life on their efforts in “transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same” for their fourth annual World’s Greatest Leaders list, and Chicago Cubs baseball team president Theo Epstein has landed at number one, ahead of business mogul Jack Ma at two and Catholic leader Pope Francis in third place.
Just outside of the top five is Ava, who, at five, is recognised for becoming the first African-American woman to direct a film nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award in Selma, as well as the first black woman to direct a movie with a $100 million budget thanks to her forthcoming Disney adaptation, A Wrinkle in Time.
Colombian music superstar Shakira is at 27, with the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker applauded for becoming a “force of nature in the philanthropic world” through her work with her Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) school foundation, and Chance the Rapper checks in at number 46.
The 23-year-old hip-hop star is commended for his willingness to remain an independent artist and release his music for free, while also using his fame and funds to improve the education system for kids in his Illinois hometown, after donating $1 million (£800,000) to Chicago Public Schools.
Other notables on the list include basketball ace LeBron James at 11, comedienne Samantha Bee at 19, and Nigerian feminist author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who was quoted on Beyonce’s hit Flawless, at 42.
