Shawn Mendes clarifies misleading interview about fans

Pop star Shawn Mendes has clarified a misleading quote about “not understanding” his fans in a new interview with Billboard.
The Treat You Better singer graces the latest issue of the magazine, and in the cover story released on Thursday (25Aug16), he suggests his “most dangerous relationship” might be with his fans.
In the article, he is quoted as saying, “You’re one person. You can’t let them take everything from you. Because they will – not in a malicious way. They just love you. You have to be careful. People know me but they have no idea.”
Editors at the publication then published the story with the tagline, “Shawn Mendes on how his fans don’t truly know him” – phrasing which has upset the 18-year-old.
He has taken to Twitter to clarify his comments, writing: “I have no idea why they would say that. I did not say that!!! I explained how im growing up and so are you guys and how it takes time for you all to fully understand me and me to understand you.
“Its really unfortunate when what you say gets turned into the bad version of it… and the part that i spoke about how much my fans mean to me and what i owe them is not even touched on. Again, im sorry. Very frustrated.”
He continued to defend himself in a post via Snapchat, stating, “I just want to start by saying that I’m sorry if anybody was upset by the recent article that was put up about me. I just want to make a couple things clear about it and about myself.
“My goal with every single interview I do is to be completely as honest and real as I can be because I don’t want the world to think that I’m somebody I’m not.
“With that being said, I’m not the person they made me out to be in that article… I made it extremely clear how, at the end of the day, the positives out weigh the negatives in the millions. And I’m extremely grateful for what I do and I’m happy for what I do.”
He concluded, “Unfortunately, what you do say is taken out of context sometimes and then seems completely different from how you meant it… At the end of the day, all that matters to me is what you guys think about me and what you guys know.”
