Sheen lobbies for support of drug courts

The Apocalypse Now star, who has previously detailed his own personal battles with alcohol, publicly addressed the U.S. Congress in a plea to help the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP), which helps rehabilitate non-violent abusers.

The organisation faces budget cuts throughout America but Sheen has pledged his help to the program, insisting it’s imperative the association is backed.

He says, “Drug Courts provide hope and strength and support for those who the traditional justice system says are hopeless. Instead of indifference, they show compassion. Instead of punishment, they are shown the possibility of a new way of life.”

Friends star Matthew Perry, who formerly suffered from drug and alcohol addiction, was also on hand to show his support.
