Shields photographer dies

Garry Gross passed away in New York City on 30 November (10) after suffering a heart attack at his home in Manhattan.

The snapper worked with a number of stars over the years, producing album artwork for artists including Whitney Houston and Lou Reed, but he is most famous for his controversial shoot with Shields when she was just 10 years old.

The Blue Lagoon star posed naked for Gross as a pre-teen, and later took him to court in a bid to prevent him selling the shots but officials ruled the picture didn’t breach child pornography laws.

One of the photographs was subsequently made famous by artist Richard Prince, who took a photo of the original and featured it in his own work. The shot was withdrawn from an exhibition in London in 2009 after police warned it could breach obscenity laws.
