Mindy Kaling’s TV costumes require ‘lots of stretch’ for baby bump

Mindy Kaling’s costume designer is hiding her growing belly on television by using “lots of stretch” fabric.
The Mindy Project actress confirmed her rumoured pregnancy during a chat with U.S. newsman Willie Geist on his Sunday Today show earlier this month (Aug17).
And as Mindy is currently filming the sixth season of her show, her costume designer Salvador Perez has had to adapt her outfits for her changing figure.
“So far, so good. She doesn’t show yet,” he told USA Today. “We have another four weeks of shooting and I’m hoping to get away with it. I’m buying lots of stretch.”
Mindy, 38, is thought to be around five months pregnant, but she has not confirmed when she is due or identified the father of her child. However, Salvador has had experience in dressing Mindy with a baby bump as, in season three of the sitcom, her character was expecting.
“I had to make her a pregnancy pad (to wear under her clothes), and she hated the pregnancy pad. I’m like, ‘This isn’t my idea, you wrote this,'” he said.
Season six marks the final run of The Mindy Project, and Mindy admitted that she was feeling a “little sentimental”. Yet, she assured fans that Salvador was “pulling out all of the stops” for her attire in the concluding episodes.
Plus, if fans of the TV series want to see her ensembles up close, they can also check out a new exhibition titled The Mindy Project: Six Seasons of Style Curated by Costume Designer Salvador Perez, due to open at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles on Saturday (26Aug17). The free show will showcase many of the dazzling saris and fabulous coats Mindy wore in the show.
“Costume designing The Mindy Project has been a career-defining experience for me, I could never have imagined how magical this project would be. Looking back over six seasons and 117 episodes, I am very proud of the colourful, fashionable world I was able to create and share with the fans of The Mindy Project. This exhibit is a gift to the fans who have been so supportive all these years,” added Salvador.
