Singer Jerry McGill dies

Waylon Jennings’ former collaborator Jerry Mcgill has died, aged 73. The singer/songwriter passed away on Thursday (30May13) at a hospital in Alabama after a long battle with cancer and kidney problems, although his official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
McGill began his career in the 1950s with his band The Topcoats, and hit the road with country star Jennings in the 1960s and 1970s as his rhythm guitarist and road manager.
McGill’s career was overshadowed by his numerous run-ins with the law – he disappeared from the spotlight in the late ’70s after he was accused of attempted murder and illegal weapons possession.
Jim Lancaster, McGill’s former producer and songwriting partner, tells Memphis’ Commercial Appeal newspaper, “Any way you look at it, he was a felonious character. He was charming – but the kind of charm where he’d smile at you, and then run off with your wife. He really was like the last of the bad-guy cowboys. He was an outlaw down to his soul.”
McGill last appeared in 2009’s Very Extremely Dangerous, a documentary about his life and health woes.
