Spice Girls musical to close in June – report

The London production of Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! is reportedly set to close in June (13). The show, which was written by Jennifer Saunders and incorporates the Spice Girls’ hits, previewed in the West End in November (12) before officially opening the following month (Dec12), but it was branded a flop by critics.
Reports suggested the musical was struggling with slow ticket sales, but producers announced in February (13) that the stage run had been extended until early 2014.
However, the cast was told on Wednesday (01May13) the show will close in eight weeks’ time, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.
Cast member Anthony Topham writes in a post on his Twitter.com page, “Viva Forever given its notice and will close 29th June,” before adding, “Didn’t see it coming that early.”
Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell appeared to hint at bad news on Wednesday when a fan on the microblogging site asked the singer how her day had been, she replied, “Unexpected… ‘good’ & ‘bad’, feeling dunno (sic) – sometimes things just happen.”
Halliwell’s bandmate Emma Bunton has previously revealed the group was working on transferring their West End musical to Broadway, but it is not known if the move will still happen.
