Spider-Man brings home U.K. box office crown

Spider-Man: Homecoming has spun in at the top of the U.K. box office chart.

The superhero reboot, which features British actor Tom Holland as web-slinging high school student Peter Parker, debuted with takings of $12 million over the weekend (07-09Jul17).

The impressive U.K. opening for the movie, which also stars Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr. and Zendaya, means that it is the number one movie on both sides of the Atlantic, having made $117 million in North America.

It is the first standalone Spider-Man movie to tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise.

Last week’s (end02Jul17) number one, animated comedy caper Despicable Me 3, falls to number two with ticket sales of $6.85 million.

Edgar Wright’s heist thriller Baby Driver is at three with $1.68 million, while Transformers: The Last Knight is at four having made $517,000 this weekend.

Wonder Woman hangs on to round out the top five with $387,500.
