Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has confirmed Spider-Man will not appear in the Venom movie.

In the lead-up to the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming with Tom Holland as the title character, fans have speculated that the web-slinging hero may also appear in Tom Hardy’s upcoming superhero flick. Film producer Amy Pascal also stoked rumors earlier this month (Jun17) when she hinted that there might be a crossover between the two films, stating “they will be connected to each other”.

However, film producer and Marvel Studios president Feige dismissed the rumors during an interview at the Hollywood premiere of the new Spider-Man movie on Wednesday night (28Jun17).
“No,” said Feige when questioned by Variety on whether Spider-Man will appear in Venom. “I think the folks there are making a great Venom movie and I don’t know much about it, but I know they’re off to a good start with Tom Hardy.”

In the Marvel Comics series, Venom was initially conceived as a supervillain who is bent on destroying Spider-Man and then becomes an anti-hero. Hardy confirmed that he would be taking on the role in May, with Ruben Fleischer tapped to direct. Little is known about the plot of the Venom film, but Marvel has slated it for release in October 2018.

Previously, the character appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, where he was played by Topher Grace.

While Holland’s Spider-Man won’t appear in Venom, he will have a part to play Avengers: Infinity War, having also appeared in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

And Marvel mastermind Feige also explained the decision to tie Spider-Man into The Avengers franchise.

“We’ve always believed there was a Spider-Man in our cinematic universe, you just haven’t met him yet. So we get to bring him home, the duel meaning of our Homecoming title, into the MCU, where he gets to interact with all our other characters exactly like he was created to do,” he shared.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters from 5 July.
