St. Vincent directing adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray

Musician-turned-filmmaker St. Vincent is set to make her feature directorial debut with an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel The Portrait Of Dorian Gray.
Kristen Stewart’s ex-girlfriend will put a new spin on the film and plans to cast a woman as Gray, a hedonistic man in the Victorian age who is the subject of a painting that ages, while he stays young.
David Birke will write the script for the film, according to Variety.com.
St. Vincent, real name Annie Clark, made her directorial debut earlier this year (17) with the short film Birthday Party, which was a part of the XX horror anthology. She co-wrote, scored and directed the film, which starred Melanie Lynskey, Joe Swanberg and Sheila Vand.
“I never saw myself even seeing a horror film,” the musician confessed to Billboard when asked about her shocking directorial debut. “I can’t watch them, because everything disgusting or violent just gets seared into my retinas.
“I’ll obsess over those images for a long time. Watching horror movies with me is so annoying – I’m the one screaming, ‘What’s going to happen next?’ But it was very amazing when I got asked to direct one. Surprisingly, I had the best time.”
The Portrait of Dorian Gray has been adapted into many films, including the 1945 version, which starred Hurd Hatfield, George Sanders and Angela Lansbury, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. It was also adapted by Oliver Parker in 2009, and featured Ben Barnes, Colin Firth, and Rebecca Hall.
Meanwhile, St. Vincent is currently working on a follow up to her self-titled 2014 album.
