The stars came out to say goodbye to Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis as he attended one of his final film events in New York on Monday night (11Dec17).
The revered Oscar winner will be turning his back on Hollywood and the movies following the release of his final film Phantom Thread on Christmas Day (25Dec17), and he attended the film’s New York launch with his co-star Lesley Manville at the Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater.
The 60-year-old actor was also joined by writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson as he rang out his impressive career with yet another well-received movie.
Lewis was later celebrated at the after party at the Harold Pratt House, where celebrities like Sienna Miller, Zosia Mamet, Hugh Dancy, Amber Tamblyn, Ben Foster, Michael Shannon, and David Schwimmer were on hand to salute Day-Lewis.
The celebrated actor recently confessed he is experiencing a deep sense of sadness after announcing his retirement from acting over this summer.
The Lincoln star released a statement about his decision to permanently walk away from the cameras back in June (17), and he recently expanded on the responsibility he feels towards his profession and how it affected his big announcement.
“I haven’t figured out (why I want to retire),” he told W magazine, “but it’s settled on me, and it’s just there. Not wanting to see (my last) film (Phantom Thread) is connected to the decision I’ve made to stop working as an actor. But it’s not why the sadness came to stay. That happened during the telling of the story, and I don’t really know why…”
“I dread to use the overused word artist, but there’s something of the responsibility of the artist that hung over me,” he continued. “I need to believe in the value of what I’m doing. The work can seem vital. Irresistible, even. And if an audience believes it, that should be good enough for me. But, lately, it isn’t.”
