Canadian rock veteran has died, aged 69.
The Streetheart frontman passed away on Friday (21Jul17) after suffering heart failure, reports Billboard.com.
Guitarist Jeff Neill broke the news to fans in a post on the band’s social media pages, weeks after the group had to cancel their farewell 40th anniversary tour due to Shields’ health issues, which included emergency surgery.
“It is with deep sadness and regret that I announce that our dear friend and bandmate Kenny Shields has passed away quietly and peacefully early this morning at the St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg,” he wrote.
The message continued, “We are most grateful to each and every one of you for all the love, support and hope you have extended towards Kenny and his family over these last few weeks. I know personally how much that meant to Kenny and, I know that your kindness contributed to his inner peace in the end… RIP my brother. You will be missed. You will never be forgotten.”
Streetheart formed in 1977 and went on to enjoy chart success with hits like Draggin’ You Down, What Kind of Love is This, and One More Time, as well as a cover of the Rolling Stones’ Under My Thumb and a rendition of Tin Soldier by Small Faces.
The group initially parted ways in 1983, but reunited in 1999 to launch a comeback.
The rockers planned to bow out with one final big tour, billed as Kenny Shields & Streetheart (KS&S), but the trek, which had been due to wrap with a New Year’s Eve bash in Winnipeg, was pulled earlier this month (Jul17) after Shields was hospitalised.
