Susan Sarandon is on the lookout for a London theater role, as long as she can fit it around her family commitments.
The 71-year-old Oscar winner hasn’t trod the boards anywhere since 2009 and has never appeared on the British stage.
While Susan admits she’d love to cap her career by starring in a West End show, she says her family, including her three adult children Eva, 32, Jack, 28, and 25-year-old Miles, have to come first.
“It’s hard for me to be separated for long periods of time from my kids and my grandkids,” she told London’s Evening Standard newspaper. “My mother is 94. It’s one thing if something happens and you’re in a film – you can always come back. But it always gives me pause to be in London for too long.”
The star almost took the plunge recently and signed up to star in a play, but found she couldn’t fit it into her busy schedule.
“I was actually talking about doing something in London, but then it conflicted with (TV series) Ray Donovan,” she explained. “I’m keeping my eye open.”
If she does ever make it to the West End, Susan has warned fans she won’t be adopting a local accent.
“I also definitely don’t want to do an English accent – that’s not something I’m crazy enough to try to do,” she smiled. “It would have to be an American part. I have done an English accent before, but just not in an entire country full of that accent!”
The star also spoke out about sexism in the film industry, and shared her belief that women are finally getting the opportunities they deserve in Hollywood.
“What has changed is that there are more women who are able to green-light projects,” she said. “They are telling more stories that involve women.”
