Tarantino’s roast garners laughs and affection for moviemaker

The Kill Bill star joined Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Silverman, Kathy Griffin, Richard Belzer and Rob Schneider to lead the bawdy tributes to the filmmaker at the Hilton New York hotel.

Kristin Chenoweth kicked off the event by singing the American national anthem before Jackson took to the stage and revealed his friend’s love for Elvis Presley.

He also thanked him for his role in Pulp Fiction before welcoming the star to the stage by introducing him as “Quentin Super Fly Tarantino Presley”.

During the night’s ceremony, Thurman took time to praise her friend’s moviemaking skills – but she rounded off her speech by forcing Tarantino to toast his success with wine she poured into her heels.

Griffin recalled her time dating the film mogul, while Jeff Ross teased Tarantino by declaring that his name means ‘plagiarism’ in Italian, joking: “I already roasted better versions… You’re like Martin Scoresoso”, before branding him “the most inglorious looking b**tard”, in reference to his hit 2009 film Inglourious Basterds.

But he also had words of affection for his pal: “Thank you for making all us movie geeks seem a little cooler. You changed the face of cinema. I just wish cinema would return the favour.”

Tarantino ended the night by raising his glass to his ‘roasters’ and quipping, “The no-comedian thing is kind of interesting.”

He was given a round of applause by the star-studded audience, which included Neve Campbell, who attended the event just a day after it was revealed she had filed for divorce from her husband John Light in June (10).
