Officials in California, where Manson has been serving time since the early 1970s, quickly rejected the idea that the killer should be released on Wednesday (11Apr12), ruling he is still too great a danger.
Before the hearing, Manson’s attorney, DeJon R. Lewis, said he would like to see Manson transferred to Atascadero State Hospital, telling CNN, “Charles Manson does not need incarceration at this point in his life. He needs hospitalisation.”
Manson and his associates were convicted of killing pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people in August, 1969. He is currently housed at Corcoran State Prison in a special unit separate from other inmates.
The latest ruling comes five years after Manson was last denied parole.
He was initially sentenced to death, but the state’s death penalty law was ruled unconstitutional in 1972 and his death sentence was changed to life in prison with the possibility of parole five years later.
