The Dark Knight Rises to the top of U.K. box office

The Batman trilogy’s closing film debuted at Number One in Britain after making $22.6 million (£14.6 million) in ticket sales, leaving its nearest rival – Ice Age: Continental Drift – in the shade with just $3.3 million (£2.1 million).

Fellow superhero movie The Amazing Spider-Man dropped from second to third place, with takings of $1.6 million (£1 million), and the top five is rounded out by stripper comedy Magic Mike ($1.3 million/£885,330) and romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement ($119,000/£77,160).

The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader, raked in an estimated $160 million (£100 million) on its opening weekend in the U.S.
