Angelina Jolie’s new spy thriller Salt entered into second place with takings of $3.2 million (£2.1 million), knocking animated movie Toy Story 3 into third place with a haul of $3 million (£2 million).
Flesh-eating fish movie Piranha 3D and Marmaduke, both new releases, took the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
