The Favourite and Roma lead the nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards with 10 each.
The period comedy-drama, about two cousins vying to be Queen Anne’s favourite, landed nominations on Tuesday (22Jan19) for categories including Best Picture, Best Actress for Olivia Colman, Best Supporting Actress for co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos plus a host of technical categories such as Best Costume Design.
It was joint top with Mexican film Roma, which was nominated in both the Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film categories, while its stars Yalitza Aparicio and Marina De Tavira were surprise additions in the leading and supporting actress categories. Its director Alfonso Cuaron achieved a major haul of his own, with nods for directing, screenplay, and cinematography.
The other nominees for Best Picture are BlacKkKlansman, A Star Is Born, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice, and Black Panther, the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. Christian Bale was recognised for his depiction of U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, and the other Best Actor nominees are Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book), and Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate).
Lady Gaga achieved her first acting Oscar nomination for A Star Is Born, as well as a second for Best Original Song, and her, Colman and Aparicio will compete against Glenn Close for The Wife and Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me? for Best Actress.
The other nominees for the Best Supporting Actress prize include Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) and Amy Adams (Vice), while the male equivalent is a competition between Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) and Sam Rockwell (Vice).
The nominations were announced by Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani.
The 91st Academy Awards will take place on 24 February (19) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony is currently without a host after comedian Kevin Hart stepped down after receiving backlash over old controversial tweets.
