Movie musical The Greatest Showman has reached the top of the U.K. box office chart in its sixth week of release.
The film, which stars Hugh Jackman as real-life entrepreneur P.T. Barnum and features a supporting cast which includes Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, and Zendaya, made $3.02 million in British cinemas last weekend (02-04Feb18).
The remarkable success of Michael Gracey’s film comes more than one month after its initial U.K. release, and has delighted 20th Century Fox bosses.
Cameron Saunders, the studio’s managing director in charge of U.K. theatrical releases, said in a press release: “Audiences across the country are looking for joy and happiness, and with The Greatest Showman joy and happiness has found them, shaken them by the hand and given them a great Hugh Jackman sized bear hug. We’d like to thank everyone for returning the embrace, making it the UK’s number one during the most vibrant time for cinema going in recent history.”
Disney/Pixar’s latest movie, the Mexican themed Coco is at two, having earned $2.29 million, while last week’s top film Darkest Hour falls to three with $2.27 million.
Aardman Animations’ new stop-motion animation Early Man is at four with $2.08 million, and dystopian fantasy Maze Runner: The Death Cure completes the top five with takings of $1.87 million.
