The Hobbit sequel ends 2013 atop U.K. box office

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug has continued its reign over the U.K. box office after grossing $8.18 million (£5.45 million) in the last weekend (27-29Dec13) of 2013. The fantasy sequel, starring Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom and Sir Ian McKellen, held off competition from hit family movie Frozen, which bowed at two with $5.27 million (£3.51 million). The figure boosts its total U.K. gross to an estimated $37.5 million (£25 million) in just four weeks, making it the country’s most successful Disney animation in history.
Comedy Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues rounds out the new top three, but there was disappointment for Justin Bieber – his new concert documentary, Believe, debuted in 14th place after taking in just $307,863 (£205,242) in its opening weekend. It follows a similar performance in the U.S. box office, where it was deemed a flop after entering the chart at 14 with just $2 million (£1.3 million) in takings.
