The Pogues star Philip Chevron loses cancer battle

Former The Pogues star Philip Chevron has lost his battle with cancer, aged 56. The guitarist passed away on Tuesday (08Oct13), six years after he was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 2007. He also suffered from head and neck cancer.
Dublin-born Chevron, one of Ireland’s punk pioneers, joined The Pogues in 1984 and wrote some of the band’s biggest hits, including the fan favourite Thousands Are Sailing.
He made his last public appearance in August (13) at a testimonial, during which author Roddy Doyle, Paul Brady, Gavin Friday and The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan paid tribute to Chevron.
The musician was given a clean bill of health in April, 2012, but a new inoperable tumour appeared later that year.
