Tie A Yellow Ribbon at Emmys?

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 29, 2000 – Will gold ribbons be the biggest fashion trend at the Emmy Awards this year? The Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists hope Emmy nominees will don gold ribbons in support of the striking actors during the Primetime Emmy Awards, Variety reports.

“We’re asking the nominees to wear the ribbons during the events leading up to the ceremony because they’ll be appearing in dozens of interviews during that period,” SAG spokesman Greg Krizman told the newspaper.

SAG and AFTRA have been striking against the advertising industry since April, and the gold ribbons – based on the blue and gold colors of SAG’s insignia – have become a symbol of solidarity among union activists and striking actors.

Union leaders say they have no plans to disrupt the Emmy awards ceremony, nor will they ask the winners to plug the unions’ cause in their acceptance speeches.

The Primetime Emmy Awards are slated Sept. 10.
