Tom Cruise: ‘I’ve wanted to do zero gravity aircraft scene for years’

Tom Cruise is thrilled he finally got the opportunity to film his dream zero gravity aircraft action scene for new movie The Mummy.
The 54-year-old actor stars as Nick Morton in the upcoming reboot of the scary thriller, due for release in June next year (17). The trailer for the movie delighted fans this weekend (03-04Dec16), and Tom revealed one of the movie’s most suspenseful action sequences has been an aim of his for many years during an interview on British show Lorraine on Monday (05Dec16).
The scene in question sees Tom and co-star Annabelle Wallis thrown around inside an aircraft after the military plane they are travelling on gets into trouble and crashes.
To make the sequence as realistic as possible, Tom convinced the movie studio to build a real life zero gravity environment inside an airplane.
“I have wanted to do that for years,” Tom smiled. “I told the studio, I was like, ‘We’re gonna shoot this’, and they said, ‘What are you talking about?’ I said, ‘No, we are going to shoot it for real’, and poor Annabelle Wallis who was with me, I said, ‘Annabelle, we are going to go in zero-g, and we did tests and what we’re going to do is build this set inside this airplane that’s really going to do it, and we’ll design the plane crash that we are shooting it live.’ It will put the audience right at the edge of their seat.”
That’s just one way viewers are going to be captivated by the upcoming thriller. Tom insists the film has every aspect an audience member could want, explaining: “It’s really exciting because I think with this, it has huge adventure, it’s incredibly suspenseful, terrifying – the film is going to be terrifying, and it’s got a lot of humour also. I think to have an opportunity to make a film like that on that kind of scale, we’re just finishing it now, but I can’t wait.”
