Tom Cruise’s Oblivion rockets to U.S. box office number one

Tom Cruise has obliterated the competition at the U.S. box office – his new movie Oblivion has opened at number one after grossing $38.2 million (£23.88 million). The Hollywood star’s sci-fi thriller debuted big to topple baseball drama 42, about sports icon Jackie Robinson, from the top spot following its chart triumph last week (14Apr13). The biopic, starring Harrison Ford as Los Angeles Dodgers’ late general manager Branch Rickey, slipped to second place with takings of $18 million (£11.25 million).
Animated caveman adventure The Croods takes third position with $9.5 million (£5.94 million) in its fifth weekend on release, while Scary Movie V and G.I. Joe: Retaliation round out the new top five.
