Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Argue Over Christmas tree Decorations

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have a “tinsel war” while decorating their Christmas tree each year.

The actor is currently promoting his upcoming political drama The Post, and made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night (12Dec17) to talk about the movie.

However, Tom and host Stephen quickly became embroiled in a humorous discussion about Christmas decoration etiquette and the star revealed he is quite the stickler when it comes to his favorite baubles and loves stacking “shiny objects” onto his tree.

“We’ll fight our traditional tinsel war that we always have,” he said when questioned over his holiday plans with Rita. “We alternate the years, there are some years, I think even-numbered years, I get tinsel on the tree, we negotiate it.”

However, Tom admitted that modern tinsel isn’t the same as the durable decorations he grew up with. He believes old-fashioned tinsel, though potentially dangerous, was much easier to work with.

“My thing has always been tinsel, old school tinsel. The icicle stuff. Remember when we were kids and it was made out of literally a toxic substance?” the 61-year-old asked. “It was really bad stuff… Now you can only chuck it (onto the tree) because it’s not the same carcinogen… You can’t get it to drape over the branches the same way, it’s just like a series of rat’s nests that collect on there.”

In addition, Tom explained that Christmas lights must be applied from the top to the bottom of the tree. And he disagreed with Stephen over what color lights can be used, stating that he only allows flashing white lights on his masterpiece.

“If you don’t understand the beauty of a symmetrically designed and decorated Christmas tree, get off my show,” laughed Tom.
