Amelie from Montmartre, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Alien Resurrection), won the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival. The festival’s last three winners, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000, American Beauty in 1999 and Life Is Beautiful in 1998 each went on to capture top Oscar awards. Atanarjuat, a film shot in the Innuit Eskimo language, which had previously won the Camera d’Or Award in Cannes, took the trophy for best Canadian film. The announcements, which usually take place at a festive afternoon ceremony, were moved this year to a press room in order to maintain a quiet decorum following last week’s tragedy in New York. The winners were not invited to speak.
