Tracey Emin’s My Bed installation sells for millions

Tracey Emin’s controversial messy bed art installation has smashed auction estimates by selling at auction for $3.74 million (£2.2 million). The British artist split critics in 1999 when a replica of the bed she reportedly spent a week in after a bad break-up was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize.
My Bed, which features a soiled bed sheet, vodka bottles and cigarette butts, was bought by art collector Charles Saatchi for $255,000 (£150,000) in 2000, and it was among the items up for sale at Christie’s Auction house in London on Tuesday (01Jul14).
The iconic bed which launched Emin’s career was valued at between $1.36 million (£800,000) and $2.04 million (£1.2 million), but it was snapped up for $1.7 million (£1 million) – more than its highest estimate, setting a world record for an Emin piece.
