Transgender rocker upset with Arcade Fire over Spider-Man casting

Rocker Laura Jane Grace has attacked Arcade Fire for choosing The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield over an actual transgender woman for their new We Exist video.

The Against Me! singer, who is transgender, was upset by the promo for the Canadian group’s gay-rights anthem when she realised a heterosexual actor was playing dress-up, rocking out onstage with the band at the Coachella festival in California.

Garfield shaved his head and wore a wig and a dress in the video. In a Twitter.com rant, posted on Thursday (22May14), Grace wrote, “Dear @arcadefire, maybe when making a video for a song called ‘We Exist’ you should get an actual ‘Trans’ actor instead of Spider-Man?” The Against Me! star, born Tom Gabel, came out about her gender dysphoria in 2012.

Arcade Fire have yet to respond to the tweet.
