Twelve people injured in bomb blast near German festival

Twelve people have been injured after a man set off an explosive near the entrance of the Ansbach Open music festival in Germany.
Around 2,500 people were evacuated from the open-air music festival on Sunday evening (24Jul16) after a 27-year-old man detonated an explosive device in his backpack outside Eugene’s Wine Bar in Ansbach, near the entrance to the site. He killed himself and injured 12 others, three seriously.
Ian Anderson from British rock group Jethro Tull was scheduled to perform around the time of the bombing, but it isn’t clear if he had taken to the stage when the festival was cancelled and evacuated.
The man was a Syrian who had been denied asylum in Germany last year (15) but had been allowed to remain in the country, and had been refused entry to the event because he didn’t have a ticket, the state of Bavaria’s interior minister Joachim Herrmann said.
“We don’t know if this man planned on suicide or if he had the intention of killing others,” Herrmann said, “Unfortunately, this is a terrible new attack which will surely increase people’s anxiety.”
The explosion is the latest attack to occur in Bavaria within a week, following a shooting in a Munich shopping mall in which nine people were killed, and a knife attack on a train travelling to Wurzberg.
