Veteran newsman Charlie Rose has been fired by network bosses at CBS after apologizing for his past sexual misconduct.
The longtime CBS This Morning co-host and 60 Minutes correspondent was dismissed hours after his breakfast show colleagues expressed their disappointment in the 75-year-old TV veteran.
Rose was suspended from CBS on Monday (20Nov17) after eight women accused him of making “unwanted sexual advances toward them” as part of a Washington Post article.
“A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately,” CBS News boss David Rhodes wrote in a letter to staff on Tuesday (21Nov17). “This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program.”
PBS bosses have since scrapped Rose’s long-running late night talk show, Charlie Rose.
“In light of yesterday’s revelations, PBS has terminated its relationship with Charlie Rose and cancelled distribution of his programs,” a company statement reads. “PBS expects all the producers we work with to provide a workplace where people feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect.”
Charlie Rose began airing in 1991.
Rose has released a statement, apologizing to the women behind the allegations. It reads: “It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior… I am greatly embarrassed.”
