Whoopi Goldberg receives classroom honour

Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg has has been honoured with her own classroom at a New York school. The Ghost star was the special guest at the Public Prep Network’s Namesake Luncheon last week (ends03May13), when bosses celebrated the Oscar winner’s work as an education advocate and hailed her as a positive female role model.
Goldberg, who suffers from dyslexia, admitted she was an unlikely honouree because she never actually completed high school.
She told the audience, “I actually didn’t go to school. I feel a little funny having a classroom named after me… But that’s OK because I was educated by my mother, and she was a teacher… You could’ve given this award to someone more deserving – but you couldn’t have found someone more appreciative.”
The Public Prep Network is a non-profit organisation which runs three tuition-free schools in poverty-stricken neighbourhoods across New York City.
