Will Smith appeared in the first teaser trailer for Netflix’s $90 million sci-fi fantasy movie Bright.
Set in a world where orcs live side by side with humans, Smith plays a battle hardened Los Angeles police officer in an R-rated cop procedural who is forced to work with an Orc (Joel Edgerton) to find a weapon everyone is prepared to kill for.
The short clip gave quite a big insight into the movie which looks set to be a mix of director David Ayer’s critically acclaimed End of Watch meets The Lord of the Rings, with a heap of fantasy and mysticism including a scene of Smith holding a huge battle sword.
The footage was aired during a commercial break during Sunday night’s (26Feb17) 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony and was then put out via the official Twitter account for Bright.
The streaming channel won a major bidding war to secure the rights to the movie which cost $45 million to shoot with the rest of Netflix’s hefty $90 million commitment reportedly going to talent fees.
By comparison, the streaming service paid just a third of Bright’s $90 million budget for their new movie War Machine, which stars Oscar-winner Brad Pitt, according to website MovieWeb.
The project sees Smith reteaming with Suicide Squad director Ayer on the big budget streaming movie which is set to debut later this year. Though the super-villain movie was critically mauled, it was hugely successful at the box office and scooped an Oscar for make-up and hairstyling.
On Sunday the streaming service announced itself at the Academy Awards and alongside competitor Amazon joined the ranks of the film industry’s elites winning four gold statuettes between them.
Netflix triumphed in the documentary short-subject category for 40-minute film The White Helmets, a look at rescue workers in war-torn Syria. While Amazon Studios scored a best actor trophy for Casey Affleck’s portrayal of a grieving man in Manchester by the Sea. The movie also won best original screenplay. Amazon’s other accolade came for best foreign language film for Iranian drama The Salesman.
