Winona Ryder almost lost Heathers role to Jennifer Connelly

Actress Winona Ryder has revealed she almost lost her iconic role in 1988 movie Heathers to Jennifer Connelly.
In a new Interview magazine article the 44-year-old star admits film studio executives weren’t initially impressed by the idea of Ryder playing Veronica in the cult film – and they wanted to cast another young star, Connelly.
“I was not the first choice for Veronica in Heathers,” she said. “I auditioned and they were like, ‘Oh, thanks’.
“I went to the Beverly Center (in Los Angeles) to Macy’s and had them do a makeover on me. I went back because I kind of knew that they thought I wasn’t pretty enough.”
“They were trying to get Jennifer Connelly,” she admitted.
Winona also found herself competing for roles with Martha Plimpton.
“It was just blondes,” he recalled. “I just wasn’t the type – I was told that by casting directors. I auditioned for Running on Empty and The Mosquito Coast and Martha Plimpton was just killing me. And deservedly so.
“She was so amazing and totally unusual too. She’s brilliant and had such an interesting look.”
