Wiz Khalifa ‘didn’t mean to offend anyone’ with Pablo Escobar tribute

Rapper Wiz Khalifa didn’t mean to cause offence with his recent visit to drug lord Pablo Escobar’s grave.
The 29-year-old performed in Colombia’s capital Bogota on Friday (24Mar17) and then travelled to Medellin, where he placed flowers on the grave of Escobar, who was considered a controversial figure in the country, which he terrorised in the 1980s and 1990s through bribery, kidnap and murder as head of the Medellin Cartel.
His visit, which he documented on Instagram, sparked a backlash on social media and was denounced by Medellin’s Mayor Federico Gutierrez, and now Wiz, real name Cameron Jibril Thomaz, has offered a form of apology.
“Didn’t mean to offend anyone with my personal activities in Colombia but I’m glad we came and got work done and everyone was safe. Peace and love,” he wrote besides a picture of him looking directly at the camera and raising his arms as if to say “What?”
Earlier photographs posted on his Instagram page included pictures of flowers and a marijuana joint placed next to Escobar’s grave stone, as well as the rapper posing in front of Escobar’s old Medellin apartment.
Mayor Gutierrez called the rapper a “scoundrel” and told newspaper El Colombiano that the musician should “offer apologies to the city” and honour Escobar’s victims, rather than Escobar, who was killed in 1993 in a shootout with authorities.
