Woody Allen: ‘My kids are totally unimpressed with my work’

Woody Allen has confessed his teenage daughters are “totally unimpressed” with his body of work, insisting they think of him as an “idiot savant”. The Midnight in Paris filmmaker has been honoured with a multitude of accolades in his over 50-year career, but to his two teenage children with wife Soon-Yi Previn, he is their father and nothing more.
In an interview for Harper’s Bazaar U.K., the usually private Allen tells his Blue Jasmine star Cate Blanchett that his 13 and 14-year-old daughters could not be less interested in the work he has received so much acclaim for.
He admits, “My children have expressly said: ‘Dad, you are such a loser.’ I am quoting directly there. They are totally unimpressed with what I do, or by me.
“I’ve made 45 movies or so, and I think one of the girls has seen two of them, and that’s it. They go to the movies with their friends and see the drivel that their peer group watches. You know they’re nice kids but they have no interest in me. They see me as an idiot savant who can make films but can’t change his typewriter ribbon.”
When asked by Blanchett if Allen brings his daughters to see his work on screen, he says, “I’ve tried, but they never want to go. I’ve shown them one or two Marx Brothers movies and Shadow of a Doubt, but they have no real interest.
“I could put all the riches of the celluloid world at their disposal and they wouldn’t exhibit the slightest interest in any of it – or in me, for that matter. They love me, but they are very underwhelmed by me.”
