Zoe Saldana almost turned down Star Trek

Actress Zoe Saldana almost walked away from the chance to star in director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot until her managers convinced her she would be crazy to pass on the offer. The movie beauty and self-confessed sci-fi geek was approached by Abrams about joining the classic franchise as communications officer Uhura in the 2009 remake while she was still shooting James Cameron’s Avatar epic, but she was hesitant about signing up for the job because she feared her run of good projects was just a fluke.
She tells Latina magazine, “I was afraid… I was very concerned. I think I was just a little beside myself because after the treat and the gift of booking Avatar and being in the middle of shooting, to be able to then do another great movie with another great filmmaker back to back – I was a little overwhelmed and I thought: ‘Maybe I should just take some time off and focus and just rest?’
“But my mum is a Trekkie, and my team was like, ‘Zoe, are you stupid? Don’t let fear immobilise you. This is an amazing opportunity to step into the shoes of an iconic character in an iconic series and it’s in space and you’re a sci-fi buff.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, who am I kidding? Absolutely. I’ll totally do it.'”
Saldana has since reprised her role as Uhura for Abrams’ new sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.
