Zooey Deschanel Explains ‘New Girl’/’Brooklyn Nine-Nine’Crossover

Zooey Deschanel filmed the ’80s-inspired New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossover episode with co-star Jake Johnson.

The American actress plays Jessica Day in the Fox sitcom New Girl, which revolves around her life as a teacher and the antics of her flatmates, Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris).

In an interesting move, Fox announced earlier this month (Aug16) they would be staging a crossover event between the shows New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the comedy series which stars Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta.

The hour-long event will air on 11 October (16). While Zooey thinks crossover shows are an “’80s thing to do”, she’s looking forward to filming the switch-up.

“I shot my part of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode, then we’re going to shoot our part of it next week. It’s a double crossover,” she said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night (30Aug16). “Basically the cast of New Girl go to New York because Schmidt’s getting an award from his high school and that’s how we end up in the midst of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine world.”

Along with acting, Zooey is also getting experience behind the camera, and made her directorial debut on New Girl’s season six premiere. Though she was missing a key cast member for most of the shoot, she claims not have been daunted in the slightest.

“Everyone was great, it was a good experience. The only thing was Jake Johnson’s doing a movie with Tom Cruise in England, and maybe like Morocco or something, so he was gone but written into the episode. So we had to shoot all the stuff around him,” she explained.

Zooey recently returned to New Girl after taking maternity leave following the birth of her daughter Elsie, now aged 12 months, whom she shares with her husband Jacob Pechenik.

And the 36-year-old dished to host Jimmy that Elsie is now talking, and says “Mama,” “Dada,” “bubble” and “cheese”.

“My husband taught her how to say cheese just ’cause she likes cheese so much,” she shared. “This morning, I went in and it’s still dark in her room and she’s wearing her little jammies…and she goes, ‘more…cheese!'”
