Atlanta Movie Theaters: Plaza Theatre

Atlanta’s oldest operating cinema, the Plaza Theatre is located on Ponce De Leon Ave. Founded in 1963, the theater provided both cinema and live entertainment. The theater went through many renovations from X-Rated adult cinema in 1970, independent films in 1980, to now screening a mixture of indie films, older classics, and mainstream flicks. Several big films have premiered at the Plaza Theatre, including Around the World in 80 Days (1956) and King of Kings (1961).

The theater loves to show its support for independent artists. This year, the Atlanta Film Festival premiered at the Plaza Theatre from April 22 to May 2. If you made a film, but don’t know where to distribute it, you can rent out showtimes on the theater’s website, and they’ll play it on their big screens!

When COVID-19 hit, owner Christopher Escobar decided to transform the theater into a drive-in. “This drive-in wasn’t what we had originally intended it to be,” he told Eater Atlanta. “Now it’s about allowing people to get out of the house, support the theater and local restaurants, and escape reality for a while.” Although the indoor theater has reopened, the drive-in still operates but with fewer films.
