Van Gogh ‘fake’ proved to be authentic piece of artwork

A French landscape painting previously dismissed as a Vincent Van Gogh fake has been confirmed as the first ‘new’ piece of work by the Dutch master. The piece, Sunset at Montmajour was painted in 1888, but had remained hidden away in a private collector’s attic after experts at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Holland insisted it was not authentic.
However, new research has proved the artwork was really created by Van Gogh, who was living in Arles, France at the time of the painting.
It will now go on show at the Van Gogh Museum later this month (Sep13) and remain on display for a year.
Museum director Axel Rueger announced the findings at a press conference on Monday (09Sep13), claiming the discovery is “a once in a lifetime experience” and adding, “What makes this even more exceptional is that this is a transition work in his oeuvre, and moreover, a large painting from a period that is considered by many to be the culmination of his artistic achievement, his period in Arles.”
Van Gogh created masterpieces including The Sunflowers and The Bedroom while living in Arles.
