2 Minuten Stilte A.U.B. (1999)

Synopsis

Veteran documentary filmmaker Heddy Honigmann directs this look at how the citizens of the Netherlands recall and remember the terror of World War II. Shot entirely on May 4th, Dutch Memorial Day, the film includes interviews of war veterans and Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who tell of their harrowing experiences. The film also focuses on the conflicted feelings of their children and grandchildren, who have difficulty understanding the scope of their elders' accounts, including one woman whose father was a Nazi sympathizer. The day's ceremonies and the movie itself climax at 8 p.m. with a two-minute period of national silence. This film was screened at the 1999 Vancouver Film Festival.
