In 1999, the Amsterdam Ajax football league (or "soccer team," as Americans call it) were celebrating their 100th season, but their play that season was nothing to cheer about; the Ajax had a decidedly bad year, and this documentary takes a look at the physical and emotional toil of a professional athlete's life, the latter of which is only intensified by a losing season. As the veteran players on the team try to pull out of their losing streak, the new recruits try to find their way onto the team under especially trying circumstances, and the coaches, in a bid to hold on to their jobs, scout new players from as far away as Africa in order to find fresh blood that might bring back the Ajax's winning edge. Despite the fact that it documents a disastrous season for the Amsterdam Ajax, Ajax: Daar Hoorden Zij Engelen Zingen was pulled from theaters in certain Dutch communities due to angry threats from fans of rival football squads.
